History and Progress

MACtown, Inc., was chartered in 1962 by the state of Florida, and was founded by a handful of parents and concerned friends of the developmentally disabled.

The cornerstone of MACtown is its Adult Day Training Program. Originally constructed as an industrial workshop, and completed in 1966, it is called the Work Activities Center or (WAC). WAC concentrates on vocational opportunities for consumers with the capacity and desire to earn competitive wages. Emphasis is placed on vocational education and goals to improve employment skills with eventual placement in Supported Employment (SE).

In 1973, MACtown opened the doors of its Intermediate Care Facility (ICF). This residential facility, houses 56 Developmentally Disabled adults, where they are taught daily living and social skills necessary for coping in society. All of our residents work in the community or attend Adult Day Training Programs (ADT).

In 1986 MACtown opened a separate Recreation, and Aerobic/Weight Training Center. Here residents can socialize, enjoy various recreational activities, lift weights, perform aerobic activities, and learn new skills. MACtown employs a full time lifeguard to monitor swimming activities in its 30X20 foot swimming pool.

In 1993, MACtown opened a Skill Acquisition Center (SAC), an ADT which provides a blend of recreational and leisure programming with work opportunities for MACtown's elderly and behaviorally challenged population.

In 1999 MACtown started its Supported Independent Living Program (SIL), which serves adults who choose to live in their own apartments but need assistance in maintaining their household responsibilities and bills.

In 2002 MACtown consolidated the SIL with Supported Employment (SE) putting both programs under its External Services Division. This consolidation was combined with the initiation of our Personal Care Assistant Program (PCA), In-Home Support Program (IHS), and our Companion Aides.

In 2001 MACtown opened its first three Group Homes. The Dolphin, Marlin, and Panther Group Homes are designed to provide residential services to a smaller group of adults (usually six per home) in a friendly, family style setting.

All three homes enable individuals to become as independent as they choose, while receiving supports from our staff.
